Computer Systems and Digital Electronics BSc degree (1996, Queen Mary & Westfield College/University of London, thesis: Digital Logic Optimizer); Master of Research in Computer Vision, Image Processing, Graphics and Simulation (1997, University College London/University of London, thesis with distinction: Preserving Distinct Features at Low Level of Detail); PhD in Computer Science (2008, University College London, thesis: Vertex classification for non-uniform geometry reduction). Post-doc (2011, INESC-ID Lisboa, VIZIR project: “Interactive Visualization of Huge 3D Data sets in Parallel Architectures”, out-of-core visualization of large point clouds models,  co-supervised 3 Comptuer Graphics oriented master thesis in Instituto Superior Técnico).

Research assistant in the Department of Geomatic engineering, University College London (2006-07, Vertical Offshore Reference Frame (VORF)). Created a novel point-in-polygon algorithm that enables massive bathymetric data (>50GB) to be processed in minutes and is I/O bound.
Consultant for the Department of Geomatic engineering, University College London (2008, photogrammetry project).

Internship at Artescan | 3D Laser Scanning, Mobile LiDAR Mapping & Photogrammetry Survery Services (2009, 1.5 months)
Invited lecturer at Instituto Politécnico of Portalegre (IPP), Escola Superior de Tecnologia e Gestão (>=2011, 2.5years), lectured Computer Graphics, Programming, Project Management, supervised 9 Computer Graphics oriented undergraduate thesis.
Researcher at Albatroz Engenharia (2012&2013, high power line inspection company, developed pont-cloud shape-analysis classifiers, and new segmentation algorithms for out-of-core LIDAR data).

Collaborator (>2012) in a novel minimally invasive surgery system with Hospital Dr. José Maria Grande of Portalegre and Centro de Cirugía de Mínima Invasión Jesús Usón(Spain).

CIAUD research group member (>= December, 2015), aiming to develop tools that aid the modeling process of architectural documents from point-cloud data. Other interests include visualization, meshing, registration, HDR, shape-analysis and navigation.
Reviewer for the International Journal on Remote Sensing, Sensors, Winter School of Computer Graphics.
Co-author of 28 peer-review articles with contributions in several areas (e.g: mesh cleaning, level of detail, interactive visualization, compression, animation, collision detection, image-based rendering, cultural heritage, GIS, hydrography, photogrammetry, computational geometry, computer assisted surgery, physiotherapy tools, navigation, augmented reality, mobile phone development).

Was awarded with his former student João Tavares, ex aequo the 1st prize of the “Ser-Capaz 2012” (nation-wide competition) by Associação Salvador for a novel Physiotherapy tool.
