José Manuel Pinto Duarte

José Pinto Duarte é licenciado em Arquitectura pela Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa (FAUTL), e mestrado e doutorado em Design e Computação pelo MIT. Atualmente, ele é professor e presidente da Faculdade de Arquitectura Universidade de Lisboa (FAUL), bem como Visiting Scientist no MIT.

Foi Presidente da eCAADe - educação e pesquisa em desenho assistido por computador de arquitetura na Europa, fundador dos Laboratórios de Investigação em Arquitectura (ISTAR Labs) na UTL e do Laboratório de Prototipagem Rápida na FAUL, onde é diretor do Programa de Doutoramento em Design e Computação.

Os seus interesses de investigação são o desenvolvimento de métodos de concepção e de produção com base em novas tecnologias. A sua investigação atual está centrada no uso de tais métodos para a personalização em série em Arquitetura, Urbanismo, e Design.

Neste campo, coordenou os projectos ISTAR (~€450K), Cidade de Indução (~€195K) e ModelSim (~€10K), e foi um investigador nos projectos Digital Alberti (~€190K), Integração de gramáticas da forma e Algoritmos Genéticos (~€180K) e Tecton 3D (~€156K), bem como consultor em outros projetos, todos eles financiados pela Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT).

Publicou extensivamente sobre tais temas , incluindo mais de 35 artigos em revistas da especialidade e 90 artigos de conferência, 12 capítulos de livros, cinco livros, todos a nível internacional. Foram publicados artigos sobre o seu trabalho em revistas de grande circulação, como A + U (Japão), Popular Science (EUA), e New Scientist (UK).

É membro do conselho editorial de revistas como Urban Design International, e revisor da Environment and Planning B, and Artificial Intelligence in Engineering Design, Architecture and Manufacturing, entre outros.

Foi bolseiro da FCT, do Programa Fulbright, da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e da Fundação Luso-Americana para o Desenvolvimento.

Em 2008 recebeu o prémio UTL/ Santander de investigação em arquitectura.
